CAN YELEĞİ

“Life Vest,” a play by Gönül Kıvılcım, is staged on Istanbul Municipality City Theatres.

“Life Vest” is the story of a refugee mother, Zahra, who tries to cope with her new life while the previous one, interrupted by war, dominates her memories. As she drifts away from her native land, she runs into her wealthier neighbour who has turned into an enemy, accusing Zahra and others like her of being the cause of the war. In a country in transition, however, they share the same fate: the conditions of exile equalize them.
As they journey into the unknown, we witness their face-to-face confrontation even as we confront our own fears of the inscrutable. The play lingers on the disturbing, enduring question: How is it that we turn what we do not know into an “other” even when we all live in the same boat?
